Kindergarten Blessing of the Backpacks

On Sunday, August 16, we will celebrate our new Saint Matthew kindergarteners and their families during the 10:00 worship service. This Backpack Blessing is the first Milestone of our new school year!

Kindergarten Families - On Sunday, please:

• Bring your child and their school backpack.

• Check your child in as usual.

• Bring your child into worship with you rather than taking them directly to class.

After the first song, we will invite our kindergarteners and their families forward for a blessing. Backpacks represent the work and learning ahead, and—as with every part of life—we bring this before God. For our church family, this is also a beautiful opportunity to surround your family with support and prayer during this season of transition.

At the conclusion of the blessing, Sue will take the children to their classroom for their regular Sunday class.

Kids, get ready for an evening packed with excitement!

Elementary-aged kids (K–5th) will enjoy a fun night with dinner, games, crafts, a movie, snacks, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.

Kids ages 5 and under will have their own calmer, age-appropriate experience in a separate space, with activities, crafts, and play designed specifically for our youngest guests. (**4 or 5 year olds may choose to stay with older siblings)

This is a community event open to all children ages 1–11, so invite a friend!

Kids' Night Out runs from 4:30–8:00 p.m. at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church (399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek).

• Pizza dinner is included and will be served between 5:00–5:30 p.m.

• The cost is $35 per child / $55 per family, and pre-registration is required.

• To ensure safe child-caregiver ratios, we are unable to accept walk-up registrations. Therefore, registration will close when we reach capacity or the Wednesday prior to the event, whichever comes first.

The Fifth Grade Milestone, also called Level Up, celebrates the exciting transition from Saint Matt's Kids into Saint Matt’s Youth. It’s both a moment of looking back with gratitude and looking forward with anticipation as students begin their middle school journey.

Fifth graders are invited to a special evening filled with food, games, prizes, and connection with both Kids and Youth leaders. At the same time, parents are given space to reflect on their child’s growth, connect with other parents, and receive support for the new joys and challenges that come with the middle school years.

Along with this celebration, students also get a “sneak peek” of Youth Group before the school year ends—helping them build friendships, grow in faith, and feel at home as they enter middle school. Finally, we recognize our Fifth Graders at a special commissioning in worship where parents and kids are both celebrated, encouraged by the truth that they are not walking this journey alone but surrounded by a community of faith.

The Fourth Grade Bible Milestone is a special opportunity for our whole church family to celebrate the ways God has been at work in the lives of our children through Children's Ministry. By this point, many children already have a strong foundation in scripture from Sunday classes, VBS, and other experiences. Now, they take the next step: receiving their own Bible and beginning to build a faith that will last a lifetime.

This milestone has two parts. First, children and their parents come together for a class where they share a meal, learn side by side, and explore how to engage with the Bible at this new stage of life. Then, during worship, each fourth grader is presented with a Bible and blessed by the congregation.

This milestone not only celebrates what God has already done, but also equips families to continue growing together in faith as children step into a new season of physical, emotional, and spiritual maturity.
